Simplest chrome of all

The easiest chrome uses a canned Max material. It does not actually reflect the scene elements. It uses Lakedusk, jpg as a reflection image; it is rather softened, so you cannot see the image clearly.

Hit the standard button in the Material Map browser

Tip: make sure to browse from the Mtl Library as shown here.

Click on Metal_Chrome

If you do not see these names, click on open and select 3dsmax from the materiallibraries folder.

This is an anisotropic material. It does not use ray tracing, there is simply an environment image in the reflection slot.

Take a look under the maps rollout, it shows how the image is in the "reflection" slot:

Test render.
If you do not see the image or see a warning about a missing image ...

... click on the bitmap slot as shown below and navigate to lakedusk.jpg in the backround folder.

Look for Lakedusk.jpg in backgrounds folder.

This render uses the canned max scene lighting.

This shows the effect of casting a 1.0 spotlight on the model:

If you add a box or other model nearby, the boxes will not actually reflect.
